It was a long, sunny drive up to the village of Putten in the middle of the Netherlands. Time to get away, but mostly to meet someone special from Pat’s home church. We walked into the organization’s headquarters, wondering where she would be. We finally sighted her in the middle of a group of people. It was Esther from Allentown, PA, running a seminar for BCM International to train the trainers of children’s workers across the world (I hope I’ve said that right!). We were so glad for the opportunity to connect, especially since Pat’s mother has cared for Esther’s 4-year old daughter Abby when she was in the church nursery! It’s great to partner in serving the Lord with so many precious people in different countries!

BMW has given the 3-series Coupe´ and Convertible their mandatory facelifts including new bumpers, head and tail lights and slightly longer overhangs to reinforce their presence on the road.
Along with the cosmetic mid-life updates, the two two-door models get more powerful yet more efficient petrol and diesel engines.
Of most relevance to the Thai market is the new entry-level version in the guise of 318i that’s already used in the Saloon. The 320i’s 2.0-litre has been detuned to 143hp to effectively make the Coupe´ and Convertible more affordable than ever.
No word on pricing yet, but it is hoped the 318i Coupe´ would come to Thai shores at slightly over B3.5m. The 320i Coupe is currently imported at B3.999m _ B9,000 more than the Audi A5 2.0.
A bigger disparity can occur in the Convertible range since BMW (Thailand) only offers it in 325i form at B5.29m. The 318i treatment could make the folding hard-top 3-series an even more attractive proposition in the B4m level for buyers preferring style over performance.
On the diesel front, the 320d’s 2.0-litre motor has been upped to 184hp from 177 and is applied on all Threes regardless of body style. This enhancement is also seen in the just-announced new 5-series.
On top of the 3-series range is a 306hp 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six with unchanged power but improved emissions, although local sales don’t focus on the 335i due to the tax structure penalising high-output engines in the country. The 135i Coupe and Convertible also get the same treatment.
- Mini’s engine range will be revamped this year to reflect the same philosophy of BMW’s tweaked motor line: more performance yet with more efficiency.
With the use of fully variable valve control, the Cooper S’s turbo 1.6-litre engine _ also used by Peugeot and Citroen _ now gives out 9hp more at 184, while the Cooper’s non-turbo 1.6-litre gains 2hp at 122. The One’s motor has also been boosted from 1.4 to 1.6 litres to enjoy a power hike of 3hp at 98hp.
Like the updated 3-series, Mini’s new engine range would be launched in Europe in March with Thai sales to follow shortly later and fitted to the Hatch, Clubman and Convertible versions.
The 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is was just rolled out at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show last week, and shortly after, courtesy of some enthusiast forums and a leaked document from BMW Canada, what appeared to be the specs on the 2011 335is Coupe and Convertible were been leaked as well. Today, BMW USA itself gets in on the act, revealing photos of the 335is Coupe and Convertible ahead of their official debut.
As is clearly marked on the rear deck of the vehicles in these photos, these are the 2011 BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible. The most interesting and relevant detail of the new 335is is the more powerful version of the N54 twin-turbo straigh-six engine. Unlike the regular 2011 BMW 335i, it won’t be getting the single twin-scroll turbo N55 engine. Instead, it gets an up-rated 322 horsepower, 332-pound-feet of torque from the older mill.
That’s an interesting factoid when compared to the Z4 sDrive35is, which gets 335 horsepower out of the same engine and two-letter name appendage, though the torque rating stays the same. The discrepancy may lie in slightly different standards of tune and emissions for Canada, meaning the U.S. version might be rated at the same 335 horsepower as the Z4.
Other key data points extracted from the leaked document include the addition of a new sport exhaust system with black chrome tailpipes, an extra water cooler, high-output cooling fan, optional 7-speed DCT dual-clutch gearbox and the deletion of the foglights on the 335is Coupe to allow for more engine cooling.
Germany’s reputable car industry has long been seen by Germans and foreigners alike as the ultimate symbol of the country’s efficiency. BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Audi market many different kinds of car. But the emphasis on efficiency and reliability is one thing that they have in common.
Audi builds more than half a million cars in 2009 and in the Bavarian town of Ingolstadt, they have built a state of the art car factory, which is the size of a small town. Audi is by far the biggest local employer and as there is such a high demand for manufacturing skills Audi employ’s only the best workers and in return offers some very complex apprenticeship schemes.
All over Germany, companies undergo work experience placements for school leavers and teach them how they want their products to be made. These apprenticeship schemes can be quite expensive, but Audi, who take on around 700 new applicants a year, believe the advantages are clear. The system will remain in place for the future. However the past successes of the German economy are being increasingly questioned in a competitive, globalised world.
Prices are much higher in Germany than in other countries, with a whole range of social benefits that would seem unthinkable in Britain or elsewhere in Europe. Manufacturers in England also offer a wide and exciting range of career opportunities for exceptional young people; however Audi has taken their enviable position in an ever changing automotive world and made it their objective to breed the best engineers, designers and business gurus and so on.
I knew a friend who is on a training scheme at Audi in Devon’s dealership. Needless to say it’s hard work but has opened many windows and doors for a very promising and colourful future. Germany have the right idea and only hope we can follow in its footsteps.

The well known Luxury automobile manufacturer BMW has revealed its new 3rd series luxury sedan for its fans. BMW has prepared a new face lift over its Coupe and Cabriolet editions of its 3rd series sedan. After the official announcement of the new series it is quite clear that the new 3rd Series 2011 Edition has got a slightly restyled front with the biggest changes being made to the kidney styled grille which seems to be taken from its 5th series. Apart to this the head lamps were also tweaked with an LED eye strip which is giving quite decent look. The front bumper has been also revamped in order to give more aggressive look to its new 3rd Series 2011 Edition. As far as rear view is concerned the new BMW 3rd Series 2011 Edition has a new look for its tail light. It glows with a new pattern when turned ON.
When you look at the engine then the new BMW 3rd Series 2011 Edition is powered with a new 335i version churning out 143HP, the new 335i version of engine will now meet EURO 5 standard however for its diesel engine fans the new 3rd Series 2011 Edition will equipped with 320d version churning out 184HP and another 325d version with churn out 204HP all the new version of engines will meet the EURO 5 standards.
The new BMW 3rd Series 2011 Edition will be going to have Turbocharged units with 3-cylinder petrol turbo engines of 1.5L displacement delivering about 143HP while its diesel counterparts will be going to churn out about 300Nm of Torque. For its US customers the BMW will offer the face lift over Coupe and Cabriolet 3 Series in the 328i version engine churning out great 230HP power-output apart to this the new 335i houses the new N55 300 HP unit. Both the power units installed in the new 3rd Series 2011 Edition offers improved efficiency and lower emission with great performance.

BMW motorcycles are built to be ridden. It’s not surprising to see a thirty-year-old BMW still providing daily transportation for its original owner; other riders swear by their tourers for journeys around the world.

High school driver education may be the most convenient way to learn driving skills, but it doesn’t always produce safer drivers. Parents also should set good examples when they drive while reinforcing the lessons their teens learned in drivers ed.
Restrict night driving.
Most nighttime fatal crashes among young drivers occur between 9 p.m. and midnight, so you can reduce their risk of a crash by restricting nighttime driving after 9 p.m. The problem isn’t just that late-night driving requires more skill. Outings late at night tend to be recreational. In these circumstances, even teens who usually follow all the rules can easily be distracted or encouraged to take risks.
Restrict passengers.
Teen passengers in a vehicle can distract a beginning driver and/or lead to greater risk-taking. Because young drivers often transport their friends, there’s a teen passenger problem as well as a teen driver problem. In 2003, 59 percent of teenage passenger deaths occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. While night driving with passengers is particularly lethal, many fatal crashes with teen passengers occur during the day. The best policy is to restrict teen passengers, especially multiple teens, all the time.
Supervise practice driving.
Take an active role in helping your teenager learn how to drive. Plan a series of practice sessions in a wide variety of situations, including night driving. Give beginners time to work up to challenges like driving in heavy traffic or on the freeway. Supervised practice should be spread over at least six months and continue even after a teenager graduates from a learner’s permit to a restricted or full license.
Remember you are a role model.
New drivers learn a lot by example, so practice safe driving. Teens who have crashes and violations often have parents with poor driving records.
Require safety belt use.
Don’t assume that seat belt use when you’re in the car with your 16-year-old means belts will be used all the time, especially when your child is out with peers. Remember that belt use is lower among teenagers than older people. Insist on belts all the time.
Prohibit driving after drinking.
Make it clear that it’s illegal and highly dangerous for a teenager to drive after drinking alcohol or using any other drug. While alcohol isn’t a factor in most crashes of 16-year-old drivers, even small amounts of alcohol will impair teens.
Choose vehicles for safety, not image.
Teenagers should drive vehicles that reduce their chances of a crash and offer protection in case they do crash. For example, small cars don’t offer the best protection in a crash. Avoid cars with performance images that might encourage speeding. Also, be mindful that certain vehicles with a higher center of gravity may be more prone to roll over.

It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for BMWs, but more than ever, I’ve found my BMW enthusiasm taking a shift back in time. It’s weird to think that the first E46 M3s rolled out onto the showroom 9 years ago, but cars like this make the E46 chassis scream for the spotlight.
To be honest, if I was driving around in something that looked like this, it would make me think….what E90?
I had a strange dream last night. I had been asked to work at a trade exhibition selling BMW cars. Quite why I am not sure as I am no salesman, but I was asked how I would approach this task, to which I responded that all cars have a wheel more or less at each corner and for the most part were a simple mode of transport. So I said I would concentrate on the enjoyment and wonderful experience of driving a BMW, and of course their reliability, making them better cars and better performers than the rest. That of course is the BMW approach to marketing, and whilst I do not have one of their cars, clearly my subconscious as been imbued with their philosophy.
Some people I know, both clients and family, have been let down recently by people they trusted, and in all cases this has been because they were engaging amateurs and people not up to the task. I have mentioned previously that it is no good employing anyone to provide services to your business who is not a full time professional in their area. Part-timers and co-opted amateurs will not be up to the job and indeed it is not fair to ask them to do it in the first place, because it will all end in tears; ours and those who have failed us, and there will be bad blood.
What I have been thinking about is that we need to engage trusted and recommended people to support our businesses, and we need to be the best in our field at what we do. We need to be different from the rest, to have something special as far as our prospects are concerned so that they want to be our clients. We need to be the Waitrose experience, top quality products and services for which we can charge a decent amount have our clients or customers and clients come back to us again and again. Jim Connolly would explain it better actually, so why not ask him?
In this difficult market it has been hard to avoid grabbing at every piece of business even where the reward is not great. I have done my best in the last couple of years because it is no good working hard without proper profit. I already provide a quality service. I am going to try even harder to live up to the philosophy of providing perceived quality in the coming years. What about you? What do you think?
